What is Nuclear Medicine?

Nuclear Medicine is a form of medical imaging which utilizes radiation known as gamma rays. 

Radioactive pharmaceuticals, known as radiopharmaceuticals or radiotracers, are injected, ingested or inhaled by the patient. These radiopharmaceuticals are taken up by the organ of interest within the body that is to be imaged. 

Gamma rays being emitted by these radiopharmaceuticals are picked up by an instrument known as a gamma camera. This gamma camera is connected to a computer and an image of the organ is produced. 

Nuclear Medicine is most commonly used in the diagnosis of many forms of cancer. 

Nuclear Medicine imaging is performed by a Nuclear Medicine Technologist. 

What does a Nuclear Medicine Technologist do?

Nuclear Medicine Technologists work in the Nuclear Medicine Department of hospitals and health clinics administering radiopharmaceuticals to patients and performing the appropriate scans. 

Nuclear medicine technologists must interact directly with patients, nuclear medicine physicians, hospital staff and computers. 

Nuclear medicine technologists must interact with radiation daily while maintaining the lowest amount of radiation exposure to themselves and their patients. 

They must ensure that patients fully understand the nuclear imaging procedure they are about to receive and obtain consent prior to imaging. 

Nuclear Medicine Technologists must administer radiopharmaceuticals to the patient and perform the required scans. 

Technologists must obtain images with the highest diagnostic quality possible, analyze them and pass them on the Nuclear Medicine Physician. 

How do I become a Nuclear Medicine Technologist?

To become a Nuclear Medicine Technologist you must obtain a degree or diploma in Nuclear Medicine Technology. 

These programs are usually between 2 to 4 years in length. 

I have no unviersity level education and I have never worked in the radiation imaging health care field. 

You will have to take a 4 year program which is similar to most university programs and you will obtain a Bachelor’s Degree at the end. 

I have worked in the radiation imaging health care field and i am looking to change profession. 

You may be eligible to take 2 year program such as an Associate’s Degree in order to gain the appropriate additional training you require to become a Nuclear Medicine Technologist. 

Once you have completed the appropriate accredited program you must then become licensed and registered under the Nuclear Medicine Certification Board of the country you wish to work in. 

How much will I make as a Nuclear Medicine Technologist?

The average salary for a nuclear medicine technologist is between $55,000 - $65,000 USD. 

How difficult is it to get hired as a Nuclear Medicine Technologist?

Nuclear Medicine Technologist are currently in high demand. This is due to the pressure on the health care industry cause by the increasing elderly population. The increasing number of cancer cases is also increasing the demand for diagnostic Nuclear Medicine scans.
